How does your College Admission Essay help you to get noticed amongst thousands?

April 23rd, 2010

Consider your college admission essay as your powerful tool to show your true capabilities and persuade the selection committee about your true worthiness.

Is it really easy to get admission in a college of your choice, today?

The answer is ‘No’. The reasons being, there is a sharp rise in the number of applications being received by colleges, year over year. More number of applications means more competition. This has made it very difficult for a student to secure his seat at selected colleges.

What do selection staff look in a student?

Today, the selection staff reviews each application individually with utmost care, because they seek best students for their college. Therefore, it is not sufficient for a student just to have a good grade at School, and good score at SAT. They need to prove much more than that. Colleges today explore the personal attributes like leadership quality, self motivation, curiosity, personality traits and what he can contribute to their college, etc in a student.

Does College Admission Essay really help students?

Yes, it certainly does. Writing an essay provides a very good opportunity for students to express them completely – depending upon his writing ability. In writing an essay, a student can describe his strengths, weakness and other important attributes vividly at his own time. He also has an opportunity to obtain expert opinions from people around him. This is not possible in any other selection methods.

The Points to consider for a good college admission essay.

Writing a persuading essay requires great amount of patience and tireless efforts. Here, I am trying to provide you with few useful tips on how you can write a college admission essay.

(1) Trust yourself.
Many people find it difficult to get started and thus abandon it. I would advise you not to surrender without experimenting with it. Have faith in yourself and try it out. At the end, you will find that you could do it wonderfully.

(2) Ask as many questions as you can to yourself.
Ask as many questions as you can. For example you can ask: (1) what does admission committee expects from your essay? (2) How my essay will be different from the others?
(3) Focus on your strengths and weaknesses (5) Ask questions that can unfold your attributes like your creativity, your quality, your passion etc. Decide which of your positive qualities you wish to highlight. This exercise will prepare a mental outline of your essay.

(3) Jot down the points.
Once you have made enough mental exercise, put your thoughts on paper. Put everything on paper whatsoever they are. The thought that may seem unimportant at time, may turn out to be other way round at a later stage. So do not disregard even a small thought, just jot them down on paper. This is the first ladder towards your fine admission essay.

(4) Drafting.
In this stage, all you have to do is to organize your thoughts and elaborate each topic with supporting evidence and argument. Essays consist of three parts viz. Introduction, Body and the Conclusion, relating to each other.

4.1 Introduction.
Starting with introduction, just elaborate the points that you did brainstormed earlier and connect them. Remember that the assessing officer will have only few minutes to review your admission essay. Therefore, give due importance to your introduction part and convince him to read the remaining essay following the introduction. Be honest and sincere in what you write about yourself.

4.2 Body.
The body of your essay may have more than one paragraph. Try to focus each paragraph on each topic. Whatever you write should always be supported by evidence and should be expressed in a convincing way.

4.3 Conclusion.
Concluding part is also equally important for your reader. It should not sound abrupt ending of your essay. Exit gracefully by making quick wrap-up sentences.

(5) Editing.
Once you are done with the concluding part of your admission essay, it is now time for polishing your diamond. Edit - re-edit and re-edit and re-edit until you are completely satisfied with your final version.

Good Luck!!!

Exploit or get exploited!! How far this is true? - II

March 17th, 2010

I am back after a long tearing off work load at job and finally got few hours to complete my unfinished article on Exploit or get exploited!!

In previous part, I discussed how an employee tends to get disadvantage of the company. In this part I would like to share an example how an employee gets exploited by his/her employer.

Many times an employee faces 100 types of problems which we can put into the category of exploitation. Mr. B was facing terrible issues from his leader. Mr. B never received any feedback from his superior and did not get any rating either. The fact was that Mr. B had won the confidence of entire team on his ability to tackle the issues. He was the first to be contacted when any issue arose. In this way he was a ranker but on performance appraisal meeting he did not get any rating. This resulted into less amount of salary raise. This was a straight financial loss to him despite of the fact that he performed very well.

We can interpret it in the way our understanding is. Some would say, he may not be performing as he has portrayed. Some would say he was a victim of his leader’s jealousy and employer may not be involved in it, Someone would also say that he seem to have failed in establishing the harmony with his leader and some other would say he was a fellow with hard luck because in spite of his best efforts he was not appraised satisfactorily.

Whatsoever our interpretation is, the fact is that Mr. B is a victim of corporate politics and has a strong feeling of getting exploited by his company.

Summary: Considering thousands of real life examples, I am convinced that exploitation does exist, but it is stemming from need theory. The need may be either side. This is applicable not only to employer and employee relationship but in every sphere of life.

Whose need is more intense has to make some compromise and tolerate something which he would not have otherwise. This tolerance could be recognize as exploitation or any similar thing.

If one wishes to protect himself he should continuously evaluate the situation he is in, and explore the scope of continuous improvement in whatever tasks he has on hand. If he thinks he is doing well and if he feels that people around him also admire his ability to do certain task then he should believe that whatever problems are being faced, are purely temporary. On the other side, if some employer has had a bad experienced from his employee he should evaluate his procedures thoroughly and if he finds it appropriate then he should continue following the same practice with due refinements. For one or two misuse of the system, he should not punish everyone existing on his team.

Matter of striking balance and being judicious.

Does sixth sense help managers in decision making process? If yes, how far one can rely on it?

July 5th, 2009

We have listened many things about Sixth Sense and also learned that many managers found the signals of their sixth sense on certain occasions. Sixth sense is our inner element that often tells us about what may happen as a consequence of our certain act/s. We can also call it as intuition. Some people consider the signals of this inner element and follow it where as some people do not.

It is the experience of people that they may have felt sorry about ignoring the signals of inner elements. It is inbuilt in every human (not sure about animals) and few have cultivated themselves to hear and understand these signals and some do not prefer to act upon based on the signals.

I am sharing few interesting real life example with you as shared by Shahar Andrade shared with me. A couple of 6th sense situations:

Sahar says:

(1) I woke up one day and told my mother to be aware of my Dad not going down the stairs alone he was in his last months with us but he was still mobile, so she really set guard to make sure he is not alone, till one night really late she felt asleep and he woke up and went down the stairs he tumbled all the stairs and we had to take him to the hospital for 6 stitches in his forehead.

(2) On a business level, we were offered at Astra in Egypt when I was based there a huge project to be a part of an investment project, but the funds would have been released later, In Egyot people trust people on a word of mouth moist of the time, for some reasons I didnt feel good about it and askedthe owner to really deeply research the company and the owner of that comoany, the worst part is that they were referred by very trust worthy people that we did business with for a very long time, to make a long story short, the owner didn’t feel good either and trusted both my and her feelings and that nagging voice, turned out that it was a scam and the people that referred that company ended up loosing thousands and thousands of dollars.

I invite all the readers that they may also share their real life examples of sixth sense from their professional lives. A small example of real life can inspire thousand. So come forward and share you real life examples.

How do we extend our Social Responsibility towards Old Age People or Senior Citizens?

July 5th, 2009

Though everyone on the earth is bound to become older, people often shudder to discuss about it. It is like an ostrich, shoving its head in the sand when confronted with anything unpleasant.

Many researches are being done on various aspects of problem being encountered in old age, ratio of old age people, how much life expectancy has increased over time and how much it has contributed to the increased number of old age people, etc etc. This is indeed necessary but besides this, we should also think about what best we can do for old age people individually.

Even if we think selfish, this is necessary, because we will get only what we saw today. This is like creating a culture where upon everyone around us respect them, respect their past contribution to the society, respect the knowledge they acquired in their lives, respect their skill and also respect their experience.

We should make them comfortable so that they can continue their last journey with ease and mental peace. It is fact that the status of Old Age people is different from society to society, culture to culture and from country to country, but their fundamental issues do not change. They often feel ignored, isolated, disrespected and eventually put into a situation where they feel helpless and start thinking of death.

Secondly, on one hand we are struggling to protect our intellectual property rights, especially in the age of internet, and on the other hand we let our invaluable intellectual inheritance to die out with the death of an old age person. Why we should not take benefits of their experience, skill and knowledge and thus make them feel important to us.

I had expressed my concerned in Linked-in Social Networking and I have received following comments from the readers that I am sharing:

——
(1)

A lot of senior citizens have great skills and knowledge acquired over the years.

Often they are retired because of compulsory or mandatory age restrictions. They may still be eager and able to tackle complex challenges in their respective fields.

Society should be able to utilize that grey matter to compensate for shortcomings which sometimes are difficult to overcome.

Senior citizens should be given the opportunity to continue being useful otherwise they falter and die.

The following might be a wobbly comparison but it is the one that readily comes to my mind under these circumstances:

We have recently awakened to the benefits of recycling a multitude of objects, tools and used components in our lives.
Maybe we should also put together a strong infrastructure to recycle human abilities and skills … and then maybe I’m dreaming…

(2)

Keep them active.
Keep them involved.
Refuse to write them off.
Refuse to assume that their insights, expertise, knowledge, and approaches to solving problems are outdated.

Michael A. Keane

(3)

Use reverse mortgages and organizations (AARP- strength in numbers) to elevate them to a new status: consumers with purchasing power. So companies will have to make stuff ergonomic for them, they will be listened to and taken seriously, in fact paid as consultants since no one seems to remember a lot of stuff from their era that we can’t afford to lose.

Prevent knowledge from dying out… There are tasks we (current generation) no longer remember how to do. I was talking to someone yesterday, it’s hard to find someone who can do those curly designs on houses anymore…

Make it simple for them to narrate information and pay them to do it; show what happens if that info is lost in graphic and mediapathic ways.

I saw a Stanley Steamer built in 1923 with 600,000 miles on it and running fine.

Exploit or get exploited!! How far this is true?

April 15th, 2009

Many events, diverse in nature, take place in our professional and personal lives. Our mind processes and interprets them according to our belief, education, past experience, knowledge on subject-matter, maturity level, understanding, and many more similar factors. We eventually react to each event based upon how we have interpreted it. Since each individual is unique so is their reaction.

It is our common experience to see people either getting exploited or exploiting others. This certainly raises many questions to us such as, why do people use someone in an unjust manner? Why do we appreciate people who have managed to take advantage (disadvantage) of a situation? Is it really a smart doing to take unjust advantage of a situation? What implications does this tendency have on the social psyche? Etc.

One day, a man working with an IT unit, received an interview call from a company named abc through an recruitment agency. He appeared for the interview and received an offer of 50% hike to his present package. He requested the company management to issue an offer letter so that he could resign from his existing company. He also said that he would require one month’s notice period before he could join. The Company did not see anything wrong in issuing the offer letter and issued it in a good faith.

During that one month’s time, that fellow received another call from another recruitment agency for an interview with xyz Company. He went for an interview with them too. He openly showed the offer letter and negotiated the salary. He could manage to secure another 50% raise from the offer he had received from abc company. Thus in less than one month’s time he could secure 100% rise to his salary.

People will react differently. Someone will say it was a smart work where as someone would say it was unethical to take disadvantage of the offer letter issued by the company called abc. Someone still say it was a blunder committed by the HR Manager of abc company and someone would say it was an act of breaching the faith the abc company had shown in him by issuing him the offer letter. And there may be many more reactions to this incident by different people.

Whatever interpretation we make, we can not change the implications of it on the society. Such incidents invariably prompt people to start with distrust. May be it is the only way to tackle such situation. But many genuine people might have to suffer because of someone else took the disadvantage of the situation.

It is not only individuals who take disadvantage of the situation, many organizations also do the same. We may discuss it in my next blog.

To be cont’d…
